Registration open for August 26th  Virtual ParentCamp, Voxer Book Study leading into 9/9 VPC ©ParentCamp, 2016-2020, All Rights Reserved

Here is your line up for Week 16 of Virtual ParentCamp!  Make sure you click on the links to get to know our facilitators and all the great resources they bring with them.  There are going to be some fantastic discussions this week!

Room 1[Strengthen] Proyecto Padres: ¿Por dónde empiezo a ayudar a mi hijo a aprender en casa?  Project Parents: ESOL Families Where do I even start helping my child at home? with Theresa Cruz

Theresa Cruz, Hispanic Family Engagement Coordinator, Learning Grove, in Florence, Kentucky returns to Virtual ParentCamp to lead the ESOL room.  Welcome back Theresa!  Theresa has a great idea for getting ESOL families to join Virtual ParentCamp….many families are not quite sure about joining a Zoom conversation.  Have you thought about hosting a small gathering (social distant) at a location in your community and having the group join on the Zoom?  Then they can see how it works and participate as a community.  Let us know if you would like to give it a try.  We would be happy to help!

Room 2 – [Strengthen] Parents as Talent Developers (Part 2 of a 2 part series)

Join Dr. Sheilah Jefferson-Isaac (@7dreamkeepers) or as many of us know her as Doc Sheilah and Dr. Brenda  Parents as Talent Developers Book CoverWilliams Harewood (co-author) (@docbwilliams) of Parents as Talent Developers are back with us this week.  We heard the conversations were amazing last VPC and people are excited to get back together to continue the discussion.

This book give minority parents (African American, Latino) the tools they need to help their children perform much better in school. Kernels are seeds in the plant world. The kernels on an ear of corn are the seeds needed to grow the next generation of corn. We use this term in the sense that each parental practice that we highlight in this book should be viewed as a seed for a child’s academic growth.

Room 3 – [Strengthen] Trauma-informed Approach – ACES and Resilience at School during COVID

We are thrilled to have Jim Sporleder (@SporLin) back with us at Virtual ParentCamp.

Jim Sporleder retired in 2014 as Principal of Lincoln High School in Walla Walla, WA.  Under Jim’s leadership, Lincoln High School became a “Trauma Informed” school, gaining national attention due to a dramatic drop in out of school suspensions, increased graduation rates and the number of students going on to post-secondary education.   These dramatic changes at Lincoln caught the attention of Jamie Redford, who spent a year filming the documentary, Paper Tigers, which tells the Lincoln story.

Room 4 – [Strengthen] How to Positively Support Young Learners at Home! As a parent, family member, teacher

We are thrilled to have Tabatha Rosproy (@TabathaRosproy), 2020 National Teacher of the Year with us this week!  Tabatha has been a supporter of Virtual ParentCamp since the beginning and we are thrilled she could join us.

The Little Vikes preschool program at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield was thrust in the national spotlight after its teacher, Tabatha Rosproy, was named National Teacher of the Year. A wonderful accomplishment and recognition for the value of this program.  Watch this video of the residents talking about and interacting with the kids.
