Ready to finish out the year after all those spring breaks? This week’s Virtual ParentCamp is sure to get you inspired!©ParentCamp, 2016-2021, All Rights Reserved
Sorry for the late notice this week, last week was spring break week, so now we are back at it!
Registration is open now! https://www.parentcamp.org/event/2021-04-21-vpc/.
Here we go!
Room 1 [Connect & Strengthen] – Embracing Emotional Literacy: Are you an emotion scientist or an emotion judge?
Facilitator: Dr. Emily Howell (@howells_owls), Consultant, UMKC Regional Professional Development Center
“The idea for this session was born out of a book study I led among Missouri education consultants collectively reading Permission to Feel by Marc Brackett (@marcbrackett). While we began this study to learn more about social-emotional learning for students, we discovered that as adults we all have much to learn about our own emotional literacy! When you ask someone, “how are you feeling?”, do you really listen for the answer? In this session, we are going to explore moving beyond listening for the obligatory “I’m fine” and become emotion scientists in our interactions with one another.”
Dr. Emily Howell is an educational consultant and former teacher and administrator with over 16 years in the profession. Her greatest passion in education is creating spaces where all students have what they need in order to learn and be successful in life inside and outside of school. Her work as a consultant and educational leader is in supporting teachers and systems to facilitate those practices and environments.
Room 2 [Connect & Strengthen] – A Not So Scary Talk about Race: The impact our language has on those around us
Facilitator: Cam F Awesome (@camfawesome), Diversity & Inclusion Consultant
Cam is back! This is one of our most requested sessions for an encore. Cam is an Emmy Nominated, 6 time USA National Champion, 4 time Golden Gloves National Champion, 2 Time Olympic Trials Champion Heavyweight boxer, and former Captain of the USA National boxing team. Cam Awesome is also a proud Member of the National Speakers Association. Cam is a diversity consultant whose overall goal is to address “the elephant in the room” in a way to create change, not place blame.
Room 3 [Connect & Strengthen] – All Access Pass: Accessibility for All
Facilitator: Julie Saum, Family Engagement Specialist at the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind
Join this dialogue about ensuring access for all and how many accommodations are actually beneficial for everyone. We can take this discussion in a variety of directions- accommodations and modifications to activities, learning environments and materials; the concept of universal design; even the legal aspects and what the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) says about access in the community.
Julie is the Family Engagement Specialist at the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind in Staunton, VA. Supporting families of children with disabilities has been a lifelong dream of hers and now she’s able to do that at VSDB. Julie is also a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and enjoys coming up with creative ways to ensure everyone can enjoy recreational and leisure activities.

With the new version, you will be able to change rooms on your own! Even though Julie will miss seeing you all in the main room, you can now change rooms by yourself, but you need the latest version of Zoom in order to do it. She will still be in the main room if you need assistance, it is ok.
