This month’s Virtual ParentCamp coincides with Family Engagement Week. This is the perfect time to join us for our monthly ParentCamp as we continue in our meaningful dialogues connecting families, schools and communities in stronger partnerships. We are excited to be partnering once again with The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence (@PrichardComm) this year to celebrate this important week.
It is also National Literacy Month. I hope you are all enjoying re-reading your favorite books or a new book as the nights get darker and we are spending more time indoors. I love the cozy nights in and the fire on, with a hot drink and book. This is my favorite time of year for indoor activities with my children. We love sitting together to read a book or watching a movie.
We are looking for this years’ book/movie series to indulge in for the season. For me it’s always the book followed by the movie. My oldest sometimes prefers to skip the book, but we always enjoy talking about the comparisons between the book and movie and how we would do it differently. Let me know in Mighty Networks if you have any good suggestions – for kids or for adults.

Room 1 Reclaim Your Energy: Techniques to Manage Empathy Overload
Facilitator – Allan Shedlin – Director Dadvocavy, (@DADvocacyCG) Former Principal
What is Empathy Overload and how to manage this in our lives. Join us in a fun and engaging discussion on what this means and share techniques on different ways to manage and reduce Empathy Overload.
Allan has devoted his life to improving the odds for children and families. He has three daughters, 5 grandchildren and many “bonus” sons/daughters and grandchildren. Trained as an educator, Allan has alternated between classroom service, school leadership, parenting coaching, policy development, and advising at the local, state, and national levels. In 2017, he founded the DADvocacy Consulting Group. In 2022, Allan founded and co-directed the Daddying Film Festival & Forum to enable students, dads, and other indie filmmakers to use film as a vehicle to communicate the importance of fathers or father figures in each others’ lives. Allan earned his elementary and high school diplomas from NYC’s Ethical Culture Schools, BA at Colgate University, MA at Columbia University’s Teachers College, and an ABD at Fordham University. But he considers his D-A-D and GRAND D-A-D the most important “degrees” of all.

The 4th Annual Daddying Film Festival & Forum (D3F), coming April 2025, is the world’s first and only film fest focused exclusively on promoting the importance of positive dad/father figure involvement for kids and families. WHO MAY SUBMIT? Students (1st graders – college undergrads)* may submit 1- to 15-minute films/videos (MP4 or MOV format), including music videos & comedies, that relate to one or more D3F themes: A letter to my dad, granddad, or father figure Most joyful/fun thing I ever did with my dad, granddad, or father figure If I could make one wish come true for my dad, grandad, or father figure My Daddy dream – the most positive relationship I could imagine having with my dad/granddad/father figure Men Caring – celebrating men who play nurturing fatherly roles, inspire, and positively impact the lives of children and youth. Examples include foster dads, adoptive dads, granddads, older siblings, coaches, “big brothers,” and other daddying role models. A chance to have their work screened in a professional festival setting and seen by audiences worldwide – D3F received entries from 26 countries since 2022! Room 2 Futuriti, Helping Children Find Their Future.
Join us to preview this new and innovative website platform to help all Kentuckians access and understand educational and workforce options. This new website is a collaboration between the Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) (@CPENews), Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) (@KyDeptofEd) and Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYStats) (@kystats). During this session we will allow you to give feedback on the tool, but also want to hear from YOU on what might be helpful in your or your student’s postsecondary education and career search. Come and explore this new platform giving feedback as well as taking back ideas to use within your own states.
Facilitator –Trinity Walsh– Coordinator of Early Postsecondary Opportunities
Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education and Jessica Fletcher, Director of Marketing and Analytics, KYSTATS.
Trinity Walsh is a 27 year educator holding a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Otterbein University, Master of School Counseling degree from Xavier University, Rank I in Education from Northern Kentucky University, and is currently working on her Doctorate in Education at Northern Kentucky University. Trinity was a music teacher for four years before transitioning to school counseling. In 2018 Trinity was awarded the Kentucky High School Counselor of the Year award by the Kentucky School Counselor Association, and in 2019 Trinity was awarded the Carolyn Quire Service Award by the Kentucky Association of College Admission Counseling. She currently serves as President-Elect for the Kentucky Association of College Admission Counseling and is the Co-chair of the NACAC Greater Cincinnati Regional National College Fair. Additionally, she is adjunct professor at Thomas More University in the Education Department and runs an educational non-profit specializing in inclusivity and diversity education for high school and college students. She is committed to enhancing postsecondary transitions, increasing retention, and utilizing strategies to support student outcomes by fostering student success and equity. She resides in Northern Kentucky with her husband, Jeff, and three children, Grace, Carter and Owen.
Jessica Fletcher (@JessPFletcher) joined the staff of KYSTATS (@kystats) in April 2022 as director of marketing and analytics with more than 20 years of professional experience in communications. After spending the first five years of her career in journalism, she served as director of communications for the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, where she spent 10 years communicating about public policy and workforce issues relevant to the Commonwealth’s business community. Jessica has also served in leadership roles at the Kentucky Cabinet for Education and Workforce Development and the Kentucky Department of Education. Most recently she worked with the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence.
Jessica is a lifelong Kentuckian and a graduate of Rockcastle County High School. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Eastern Kentucky University and a Master of public administration from Murray State University. She resides in Lexington with her husband, Scott.
Room 3 Building Parent Leaders in our Communities
Facilitator: Laura Beard, Director for the CommonWealth Institute for Parent Leadership
Join Laura as we explore how to empower our parents and help them advocate in our schools and communities. Laura is a resident of Bracken County, KY and joined the Prichard Committee (@PrichardComm) for Academic Excellence staff in August 2019. Laura serves as the Director for the Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership. Our President, Julie Pile, is a 2012 graduate of this program. Laura holds a BS in Human Services from the University of the Cumberlands and has more than 15 years of experience leading family engagement initiatives. Laura previously served as the Family Consultant for the Department for Public Health and the Lead Family Contact for two System of Care SAMSHA grants. Laura has three children, serves on her local FRYSC Advisory Council, and is involved in foster/adoptive support work.
Room 4 Community Schools and Their Impact.
Facilitator: Travis Marcum (@travismmarcum), Sr Director for Community Schools and Keric Seals, Community Schools State Coach
Travis Marcum is the Senior Director of Community Schools at the Prichard Committee for Educational Excellence (@PrichardComm) in Lexington, Kentucky. Travis Marcum comes with over 13 years experience in the education field. Prior to his current role, Travis was the principal of Conkwright Elementary School in Clark County, Kentucky, and was named the 2022 Principal of the Year by the Kentucky School Counselor Association. To prepare for the principal role, he was a classroom teacher for nine years, a curriculum specialist, and an assistant principal. Travis aims to inspire and empower others to succeed in all that he does and is excited to have a hand in advancing equity and reducing barriers to learning across Kentucky and beyond. Travis resides in Madison County, Kentucky with his wife Karmen and their two children, Hudson and Mila.
Keric Seals comes with extensive experience in the field of education in both secondary and higher education. He has served as Intervention & Enrichment Coordinator, District Itinerant for Exceptional Education, Exceptional Education Chair, Intervention Program Lead, Exceptional Education/Special Education and Learning and Behavioral Disorder Instructor/Case Manager, and Representative for the district Educating Boys of Color Initiative. In the area of higher education, he has served as an Educational Advisor for Student Support Services as well as an Academic Athletic Advisor and Program Facilitator. Keric Seals is also Director and President of the Academic College Training Project e23 (LLC), which assists students with academic tutoring and advising for college entrance and graduate placement exams. Currently, he is Community Schools State Coach for Prichard Committee.
HIs extracurricular work includes coaching multiple sports teams: Assistant Head Football Coach (high school), Associate Head Football Coach (high school), Head Football Coach (middle school), Head JV/Freshman Football Coach (high school), and Assistant Boys and Girls Track Coach.
Keric Seals is a proud husband, father, mentor and advisor to multiple students and friends throughout his community.
