What a warmly welcoming community we have in our #ParentCampChat Twitter Chat room! We shared some great ideas on how to Warmly Welcome Families into the new school year:
- Cheryl Graff likes to make a friendly, positive phone call a few days before school starts
- Flowers sends welcome letters as soon as she gets her class list
- Jay Posick and Craig Idacavage emphasis the importance of making a positive first impression, because “you only get one first impression” and this includes their rock star front office staff.
- Kris Jenkins meets kids at a park before school starts for play and popsicles
- Luisa Requenes’s school makes porch visits to say “hello”, give a school calendar and answer any questions.
- Brenda Vatthauer has parents write down their “Hope’s & Dream’s” for their students and posts them on a wall.
- Joe HIbbitt has kick-off events with food trucks and raffles to get everyone excited.
- Missy Callahan is going to create a survey to learn about her students
- The ringer was…Tim Vesco is planning on mailing each student a sweet potato and telling them that “School is going to be SWEET!”
When asked about how to you make sure your welcoming events are inclusive (demographics, languages and cultures) the following were suggested:
- Remind, Google Translate, Parent Square, KiNVO, Schoolze
- Involving ESL teams
- Lusia Requenes reminded educators to not use edujargon, talk in parentese
