Room 1 [Strengthen] – Simplify Learning, Simplify Teaching
Facilitator: Phyl Macomber (@AllAboutTHEPACT), Author, Keynote Speaker, and Education Specialist: CEO of Make A Difference, Inc.
Education has become pretty complicated. Instruction in today’s educational system is typically delivered in days filled with multiple things to do and just not enough time to do them. Teams continue to struggle with delivering purposeful instruction and meaningful inclusion to learners ranging from preschool to high school in ways that partner with parents and families. This session will discuss how to use simple, common sense approaches to establish successful parent engagement and create positive learning environments for every student.
Phyl Macomber is an award-winning speaker, bestselling author, and education specialist who has trained thousands of educators around the globe, advocating for children of all abilities to reach their potential in an inclusive environment. Phyl’s Amazon #1 bestseller, “Every Child Can Learn: Your Roadmap to Inclusive Education” is being referred to as “common sense education” by educators around the world.

Room 2 [Connect] – Mentoring: Changing Lives
Facilitator: Paula McPeake (@Pmcpeake1), Director of MENT2BE (@gochangealife) at Stephens Elementary (@StephensElemKY)
Facilitator: Chad Caddell (@laughwithchad), Win This Day Lead, Founder of MENT2BE (@gochangealife) at Stephens Elementary (@StephensElemKY) aka The Singing Principal
We believe every child needs a champion and we’re amazed at the high returns on such a small investment of time. We’ve seen the difference mentoring can make in our school community and watched relationships grow through the years. It’s a simple concept that really touches and changes lives.
Paula is a grandparent and have been an active volunteer in our schools and classrooms. I’ve enjoyed mentoring students as well as helping parents find the resources they need. I’m very inspired by our students. Ms Paula was recently named the Rotary Club of Florence 2021 Citizen of the Year.
It takes many words to describe Chad – friend, mentor, dad, husband, encourager, singer, comedian, leader, connector, builder into people and the list could go on and on. Chad is a light that shines lights on to others.
Room 3 [Connect] COVID Keepers – Looking at the positive side of the pandemic impact
Facilitator: Dr. Geniene Piche (@GenieneD), Director of Language Learners, Boone County Schools
Facilitator: Dr. Ted Huff (@TedHiff), Missouri Leadership Development Specialist, St. Louis Regional Professional Development Center
This room was inspired by a recent blog post from our #ptcamp friend Geniene Piche and our long-time ParentCamp friend Dr. Ted Huff who lead a fantastic discussion around this same topic a few months back. Here is an excerpt from Geniene’s blog post asking people to share their “COVID Keepers”
Now is the time, that we don’t sugar coat. We need to have “courageous conversations”, seek help when we are struggling, take time to unpack this past year and the possible unintended trauma that we as adults and our students may have experienced.
In the phenomenal training we received from the CRSSA team from NKCES at our district leadership training, this one sentence has overwhelmed my thinking. We have all been impacted by the pandemic, but we haven’t all experienced trauma. We may never, but we all have the same shared experience of a global pandemic.
One of our phenomenal principals – now Assistant Superintendent of Operations for Boone County, Mrs. Kim Best coined the term “Covid Keepers” at a principal meeting. This term has floated around in recent conversations and I approached her with the idea of writing a book. Probably overly ambitious as I’m taking courses for my Superintendent License and she is taking classes for her Doctoral degree. BUT we both felt that sharing the GOOD changes that have come out of this past year will help us remain focused on the positive.
I asked another district principal what her “covid keeper” would be and she shared two remarkable things, one logistical/procedural and one instructional.
We want to share these great things with all of you – to help you focus on the good that has come out of this crazy year. To reflect on others, perhaps inspiring you to reflect on your own practices and possibly encourage a shift/change.
Dr. Geniene Piche is committed to “Equity in Education”. She serves on the district DEI committee, mentor for KEDC, President of Kentucky Coalition for English Learners.
Dr. Ted Huff is a retired Middle School Principal who now works alongside school administrators helping them as a professional coach. An avid supporter of family engagement, character education, and academic achievement for all. He was previously named Missouri Middle School Principal of the Year.
Room 4 [Strengthen] – From the Bottom-Up: When parents shape the curriculum at school
Facilitator: JaDonnia Bishop, M.Ed. (@jadonnia), Family Engagement, Diversity Practices Consultant, Our Diversity, Family Advocacy Network
What will 21st Century learning content look like in your child’s school, and why parents are critical voices in decision-making. What should your child learn?
“Education is supposed to teach ‘how’ to think, not ‘what’ to think.” Ms. Bishop’s advocacy illustrates and guides processes and practices that re-frame school curriculum for embedded fact-based cultural relevance that organically aligns with an authentic multigenerational approach into classroom learning. Enhancing and elevating parent voices propels her to the frontlines where professional policies, perspectives and practices are equitable and transformational for children, adults, families and schools.
