We would like to give a HUGE ParentCamp thank you to our own Jerry Bond (@JeremyDBond) who lead a lively discussion on Helping Families Use Tech to Engage with & Improve their Communities in honor of Digital Citizenship Week #DigiCit.
@LauraGilchrist – Ultimate goal/Big Pic = Ability to engage w/& improve our communities. This involves viewing tech as an asset to be used strategically; using it to network/connect w/o getting lost in it The #DigCit Big Picture –Lead from this! The most meaningful actions adults can take is to 1) be there in person for kids, to be, ASK and then listen. 2) be in the tech sandbox WITH the kids. They need adults in their watching over them, enjoying tech with them, leading with tech as role models.
@WinkelerD – #digcit is how one utilizes technology in a safe way. Concerns are the disconnect of expectations/understanding between school and home. Modeling. All adults need to have effective modeling. Show them how you would like it to be used. Lead by example. Ask the kids what they are using tech for. Have them teach you something about it.
@juliepile – I feel my role is to lead by example. I set very clear expectations for the kids and make sure they understand the + & – of their digital footprints. Adults need to lead by example. Sit side by side. Be respectful. Kids are watching. SM can be used for so much good. From helping to promote a cause, to just building a kind community.
@JeremyDBond – Digital citizenship is demonstrating being a good citizen in a digital world. I’m most concerned about balance between online and offline lives, and keeping tech positive and affirming.
@Howells_Owls – There’s a strong connection between SEL and #digcit
@Tara_Desiderio – Model how to appropriately use tech and monitor what your kids are doing. It is all about quality conversations and learning as you grow together.
@JeremyDBond – I say this all the time about digital citizenship: We’re ALL learning. Learn together with your kids. #DigCit
@CommonSense – Was pointed out as a great resource – https://www.commonsense.org/
@amgonza – Tech is meant to connect us to others, to broaden our horizons. However, is tech is isolating us, it’s time for a reset.
